Alcoa Continues as a Top Achiever on Corporate Equality Index for Third Consecutive Year
Only Mining and Metals Company in Top Ranking
Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today that it is the only Mining and Metals
company to achieve a top ranking in the 2012 Corporate Equality Index
and Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality. This is the third year in a
row Alcoa has received the top score of 100 from the Human Rights
Campaign (HRC) Foundation, which evaluates American workplaces on
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality (LGBT). The HRC
Foundation is the educational segment of America′s largest civil rights
organization.
A total of 850 businesses have been rated in the 2012 Corporate Equality
Index, including the entire Fortune 500. This year, 190 companies
received a 100 percent score on significantly more stringent criteria.
To receive a perfect score, companies must have fully inclusive equal
employment opportunity policies, provide equal employment benefits,
demonstrate organizational LGBT competency, evidence their commitment to
equality publicly and exercise responsible citizenship. In addition,
this year HRC called out the growth in transgender health care benefits,
which grew to 207 companies from 85 companies a year ago, a 144 percent
increase. Alcoa will offer transgender health care benefits starting in
2012.
'Alcoa is proud to be recognized with the Best Place to Work distinction
and one of the top achievers with a perfect score on the Corporate
Equality Index,? said Alcoa Vice President of Human Resources Jack
Bergen. ?'This recognition reinforces Alcoa′s commitment to creating a
workplace that respects and provides equal opportunity to all of our
employees. Only by valuing diverse talent and perspectives, can Alcoa
continue to be the innovation leader of our industry.?
The Corporate Equality Index has become the foremost benchmark for
businesses to gauge their level of LGBT workplace inclusion against
competitors.
