New York, NY, February 8, 2013/Resource Newswire/ - Great Atlantic Resources Corp. (TSX-V:GR - "Great Atlantic" or the "Company"), is a Canadian exploration company focused on the discovery and development of mineral deposits in Atlantic Canada. The Company has recently announced the use of cutting edge LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology on its West Gore Antimony and Gold property in Nova Scotia to assist in defining new exploration targets and to extrapolate existing targets for further exploration and drilling.
Use of LIDAR on West Gore
A total of 167 square kilometers was surveyed over GR's properties in the West Gore region and the LIDAR data obtained will be used to create digital elevation terrain models for the respective project areas. The data will then be processed to create 3D structural images which will assist in identifying structurally prepared areas for exploration using conventional techniques such as ground based geochemistry/geophysics.
Extensive forest cover and lack of outcrop exposure inhibited the ability to accurately map West Gore's mineralized structures in the past. The data derived from the use of LIDAR technology will outline these structures beneath the forest cover, reducing the need to explore over segments with little exploration potential. Follow-up exploration work will be cost effective and accurate.
Introduction to LIDAR
LIDAR is an optical remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light to find range and/or other information of a distant target. This technology is used to produce highly accurate terrain elevation data in an unprecedented turnaround time. Specially modified survey aircraft are used to carry multiple LIDAR sensors over a specified territory to gather highly accurate information which reduces the need to do exploration over segments of the property with little potential and making follow up exploration work cost and time efficient.
Leading Edge Geomatics ("LEGEO"), based out of Fredericton, New Brunswick, have been engaged as terrain image specialists by Great Atlantic. Their customers include the Department of National Defence and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency. Matt Flemming of LEGEO remarked that "GR is an out of the box thinking amongst a multitude of companies in search for sought after minerals...they are serious about accuracy."
The Editors of Mining Review Online, an online periodical that provides news, updates and industry insights on undervalued and high growth potential resource companies, support LEGEO's point of view stating: "Great Atlantic's use of LIDAR technology on its projects clearly demonstrates its ahead of the pack mind set and willingness to engage innovative techniques in order to maximize efficiency in moving its projects forward."
Great Atlantic has several advanced projects in Atlantic Canada but will be focused on its West Gore Antimony/Gold mine in Nova Scotia in the upcoming quarter. Production from this historic mine produced between 70,000 and 80,000 tons of ore averaging 4.1% Sb and 0.1 opt (3gpt) Au being milled. The property has undergone periods of serious exploration by Dominion Explorers which carried out ground magnetometer, IP and VLF surveys followed up by diamond drilling in 1985 (19 holes totaling 2115 meters) and in 987 (6 holes totaling 998 meters). Great Atlantic has compiled the drill assay results and block modeled the mineralized structures. The main shaft is reported to extend to 260 meters depth in good ore and previous reports give evidence that there are several other veins yet to be discovered on the property. As Great Atlantic continues to position itself in Atlantic Canada, a politically stable and sovereign region with a rich history of producing gold mines and eager to promote its resource industry, Great Atlantic is well situated to build shareholder value over the long term.
