Westmoreland Coal Company (NasdaqGM:WLB) today announced that, in line with its strategic goal of securing reserves and resources to support long-term sustainability at its mines, it now controls over 1.1 billion tons of coal resources across its various operations. In 2012 and 2013, Westmoreland added coal resources adjacent to its Absaloka and Rosebud mines. The Absaloka mine leased 145 million tons of Rosebud McKay coal resources from the Crow Tribe of Indians and the Rosebud Mine leased 56.4 million tons of resources from a private land owner. Westmoreland′s coal resource position now includes approximately 553 million tons of proven and probable reserves and an additional 625 million tons of coal resources that require additional drilling to meet SEC requirements before being classified as reserves.
