Toronto, Canada (ABN Newswire) - Avalon Rare Metals (TSE:AVL) has been invited to chair the organizing committee for the Rare Earth Symposium at the 52nd Annual Conference of Metallurgists (COM 2013), to be held in Montreal, October 27-31, 2013 (www.cim.org/com2013). This announcement follows the successful involvement of Avalon at the inaugural Rare Earths Symposium held last year at COM 2012 (Industry Bulletin October 25th, 2012).
COM 2013 is being held in conjunction with the internationally acclaimed Material Science & Technology (MS&T'13) Conference. An estimated 3000 delegates are expected to attend the joint conferences. Avalon's Ian London, Market Development & Energy Advisor, and Mandeep Singh Rayat, Communications Associate, will return to represent Avalon's interest in the Rare Earth Symposium, with Rayat as Chair.
Under the COM 2013 theme of Shaping the Future with Technological Breakthroughs in Metallurgy and Materials, the Rare Earth Symposium accepted abstracts for 55 peer-reviewed papers and 5 poster presentations from 15 countries, far exceeding the 44 papers from 10 countries received in 2012. The program will cover a wide range of subjects in the fields of rare earth mineral and metal processing, and advanced materials technologies, including hydrometallurgical extraction of rare earth elements, and synthesis and characterization of rare earth based materials.
The 2012 Rare Earths Symposium was attended by approximately 200 delegates, equally split between academia and industrial sector specialists. COM 2013 is expected to engage a broader audience.

About Avalon Rare Metals Inc.:
Avalon Rare Metals Inc. is a mineral development company focused on rare metals deposits in Canada. Its flagship project, the 100%-owned Nechalacho Deposit, Thor Lake, NWT, is emerging as one of the largest undeveloped rare earth elements resources in the world. Its exceptional enrichment in the more valuable 'heavy' rare earth elements, which are key to enabling advances in green energy technology and other growing high-tech applications, is one of the few potential sources of these critical elements outside of China, currently the source of 95% of world supply. Avalon is well funded, has no debt and its work programs are progressing steadily. Social responsibility and environmental stewardship are corporate cornerstones.
