Cloud Peak Energy′s Antelope Mine Receives State of Wyoming Reclamation Award

02.07.2013  |  Business Wire
GILLETTE, Wyo. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cloud Peak Energy’s Antelope Mine, located near Douglas, Wyoming, received the prestigious 2013 State of Wyoming Reclamation Award from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Land Quality Division. The award was presented at the Wyoming Mining Association’s Annual Safety and Reclamation Banquet in Sheridan, Wyoming, on June 21, 2013. This reclamation award was received for the sustainable control of cheatgrass. Through innovative husbandry practices and custom seeding techniques, Antelope Mine has effectively restored reclamation areas dominated by cheatgrass to native cool and warm season plant communities. This technology is applicable to both reclaimed and native lands.

Antelope Mine has successfully transformed over 400 acres of cheatgrass-dominated lands into sustainable native perennial stands that achieve the post-mining land use goal of providing for livestock grazing and wildlife use. Cheatgrass is an undesirable introduced species that readily invades disturbed landscapes in reclamation and native rangeland. These reclamation efforts demonstrate Cloud Peak Energy’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Colin Marshall, President and CEO of Cloud Peak Energy, noted: “The company is honored to receive this award and appreciates the recognition it receives for innovative reclamation techniques.”
