Ryan Directional Services, a Nabors Company, Selects Alcoa’s Oil and Gas Drill Pipe for Faster Horizontal Drilling
Ryan Directional Services, a division of Nabors (NYSE: NBR)—the world’s largest owner and operator of land-based drilling rigs—has selected Alcoa’s (NYSE:AA) oil and gas drill pipe for its onshore horizontal drilling applications across North American shale plays.

Under the agreement, Ryan has exclusive rights to deploy Alcoa’s FarReach™ alloy drill pipe for use with directional mud motor technology in horizontal drilling. Ryan chose the Alcoa product because it enables faster rates of penetration in horizontal drilling than conventional steel drill pipe, reducing operational costs per well. Financial details were not disclosed.

Using conventional drilling motors, Alcoa’s lightweight alloy drill pipe has been proven to increase the rate of penetration versus conventional steel pipe and assist in hole cleaning during horizontal drilling. The lighter weight alloy increases rig capacity, reduces torque and drag, and reduces distance limitations on longer laterals.
